How OnlyFans Chargebacks Work (A Guide for Creators)

By Imperium Management Agency ·

Sooner or later, every creator sees a chargeback. It can be confusing the first time: the money seems to disappear, your balance looks lower than it should, and it is not clear who pays for it. This guide explains what a chargeback is, when money actually comes out, how it works with an agency split, and how to cut down on them.

What a chargeback is

A chargeback is when a fan goes to their bank or card company and disputes a payment they made on your OnlyFans, instead of asking for a refund. If the bank sides with the fan, the money is pulled back from OnlyFans, and OnlyFans pulls it back from you.

Chargebacks happen to every creator at some point. They are a normal part of the business and nothing to panic about.

  • Buyer's remorse after a big PPV or tip spend
  • A partner or family member finds the charge on the card
  • The fan claims the content was not what was promised
  • Real card fraud, where someone used a stolen card

How OnlyFans handles it

  • OnlyFans takes the chargeback straight out of your OnlyFans balance. It is handled automatically on the platform side, and nobody has to send money back to anyone.
  • OnlyFans already kept its 20% when the fan paid, so what gets pulled back is your share of that payment, the 80% that landed in your balance.
  • Under the OnlyFans Terms of Service, it can come out of pending or future earnings, along with any fees tied to the dispute.
  • The fan who filed it may lose access or be restricted on OnlyFans.
  • If your balance is low when it hits, it can come out of what you earn next, so your balance may look lower than expected for a few days.

Requested vs accepted

A chargeback being requested does not mean money comes out right away. Money only comes out once the bank accepts the dispute, so it lands in whichever pay period it was accepted in, not the period the fan made the purchase or filed the dispute. It usually goes through three stages:

  1. Requested. The fan files the dispute with their bank. Your balance is not touched yet.
  2. Under review. The bank and OnlyFans go back and forth. This can take days or weeks.
  3. Decided. If the bank accepts it, OnlyFans deducts it from your balance on that date. If the bank denies it, nothing changes and you keep the money.

How a chargeback works with an agency split

If your agency is paid a percentage of your OnlyFans net earnings, an accepted chargeback has already lowered those net earnings for the period it landed in. So the agency's share for that period is already lower. Taking it off the agency's invoice a second time would count the same chargeback twice.

Here is an example with a 30% agency share. These are example numbers only.

  • Oct 10: A fan buys a $100 PPV. OnlyFans keeps $20, and $80 lands in your balance.
  • Oct 14: The fan files a chargeback. Nothing is deducted yet.
  • Oct 22: The bank accepts it. OnlyFans pulls $80 from your balance.
  • Oct 1 to 15: your net earnings are $2,000, including the $80 sale. The agency's 30% is $600.
  • Oct 16 to 31: you earn $1,500, minus the $80 chargeback, so your net is $1,420. The agency's 30% is $426.
  • The chargeback lowered the agency's share by $24, which is 30% of the $80. You absorbed the other $56. You both carry it in the same proportion you split the sale.

How to prevent chargebacks

Nobody can fully stop chargebacks. Once a fan files, most disputes end in the fan's favor, right or wrong, because platforms would rather side with the fan than fight banks and card companies. That is why the focus is on stopping them before they are filed.

  • Deliver what was sold. Previews and descriptions should match the content. Misleading PPVs are the top source of disputes.
  • Watch for red flags. Brand new accounts spending big fast, or fans pushing for huge bundles right away, deserve extra caution.
  • Keep records. Chat history showing the fan asked for and enjoyed the content gives OnlyFans something to push back with, though it often is not enough.
  • Flag issues early. If a fan complains or threatens a dispute, tell your team right away so it can be handled before it reaches the bank.
  • Never take payment off platform. Anything outside OnlyFans has no protection at all.

How we handle chargebacks at Imperium

We settle twice a month from your OnlyFans net earnings for each period: the 1st through the 15th, and the 16th through the end of the month. An accepted chargeback has already come out of your balance, so it is already built into the net earnings we work from. You and the agency carry it in the same proportion you split the sale, and nobody has to pay anyone back. Our team keeps an eye on chargebacks and red flags for you. If a number ever looks off, email admin@imperiummgmtagency.com with a screenshot of your OnlyFans statement for that period and we will walk through it with you.

◆ FAQ

Common questions

I see a chargeback request but my balance did not change. Why?
It has not been accepted yet. Nothing comes out until the bank decides in the fan's favor.
The sale was last period but the chargeback hit this period. Which period does it affect?
The period it was accepted in. That is when it left your balance, so that is the period it lowers.
Do I need to pay my agency back, or does my agency need to credit me?
Not if your agency is paid from your net earnings. The chargeback is already handled through your balance and the net earnings the split is based on.
Should I be worried when I see a chargeback?
No. Chargebacks happen to every creator and are a normal part of running a page.
